It was quiet out there.

We stood on the cabin’s balcony, our breath congealing into a thin mist, and watched as the night sky turned into a spectacle of color.

Built on the cliffside, the cabin was a marvel of glass and wood, allowing an all-around view of the wilderness that surrounded it; the balcony we were on jutted out from the side, overlooking the fields of night-fire, and it made it feel as if we were standing on a spacecraft cruising through the wonders of space.

The pollen released by the plants swirled all around us, creating multi-colored streaks of light that danced against the dark canvas of night. Even I had to admit that as much as I loved my home planet, Hollander had its own charms.

“This is incredible,” Gayle whispered from beside me, the back of her hand gently brushing against mine. Before I knew it, we’d intertwined our fingers, the smoothness of her skin against mine making it hard to think straight. “I’ve always wanted to see the northern lights, but this...this might be even better.”

“The northern lights? What’s that?”

“It’s something that happens at certain high-latitude regions of Earth,” she explained, turning to me. Her eyes reflected the blue and red of the night-fire, and I was drawn in by her gaze. “The night sky turns into an undulating green, and it makes the sky look so...serene and peaceful.”

“I didn’t know about it,” I admitted. “What causes it?”

“Solar winds,” she replied. “They create little disturbances in the magnetosphere. And sometimes, these disturbances are strong enough to force a shower of invisible particles into the atmosphere, creating something that’s just magical.” She squeezed my hand tight. “Can you imagine it? A sun, millions of miles away, forcing a little planet to light up during the night?”

“I can imagine it,” I breathed out, the words coming out before I could stop myself. “I experience something like that every day. Every time I think of you, no matter how far you might be, I light up inside.”

She said nothing, but her lips parted in surprise as she stared up at me.

She looked into my eyes as the wisps of colorful particles danced around us, almost as if our feelings were being projected into the air. The universe had decided to be in charge of the mood, lighting up the night with its natural candles, and I couldn’t have been more thankful for it.

“Gayle, I…” I trailed off, not knowing what else to say, and decided words wouldn’t do justice to my feelings. So instead of speaking, I brought one hand up and cupped her face. Her lips parted slightly, and I leaned into her.

The moment our lips touched, firecrackers went off inside my chest. My blood thumped in my ears, reaching a boiling point in a matter of a seconds, and then it started its descent to between my legs.

Gayle laid both hands on my chest, her right palm above my heart, and melted into my embrace. As our tongues danced, I
